Young Educators: Building Culturally Responsive Relationships

This course is a beginner course for high school students interested in an Education field. It introduces them to culturally responsive education. It supports cultural identity, relationship building, community connections and various resources for educators. Students will participate in classroom observations and participation for up to 2-3 hours a day during the intensive class.  Students will learn about the Alaska Teacher Standards established by the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Childhood and the Alaska Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools, Cultural Standards for Educators, and the Guidelines for Preparing Culturally Responsive Teachers for Alaska’s Schools.

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the philosophy of education and identify its relationship to their practice.
  • Identify and explain a rationale for developmentally appropriate practice.
  • Develops the capacity to foster respectful relationships that meet students’ individual and cultural needs.
College Credit: 3 credits through UAA 
 
After Intensive Work:
  • 9 practicum hours in a local classroom
  • Two 30 minute check-ins with instructor
