Whether you are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, or you want to learn practical skills, this is the course for you. Earn certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed. Along the way you will discover what it takes to be a successful healthcare professional, from teamwork and communication to technical skills. This course will expose you to countless well-paid careers and prepare you for employment in one of the largest, and highest.
Intro to Allied Health Careers: There are a lot of opportunities in the Health Industry, and Intro to Health Careers will give you a good overview of the possibilities. Topics will include career foundations, career pathways, ethics, and safety. Whether you’re interested in becoming a health aide in your village, dental hygienist, nurse, EMT, or doctor, this course will give you a good idea of whether to pursue your interests further. This will be an intensive course, and students should come prepared for a fast-paced week. Students who successfully complete this course will be given points on a future application for Professionalism in Health Careers, a course that will be offered at University of Alaska Anchorage in the late spring or early summer 2024. Intro to Health Careers is intended for students with limited experience in the health field. Students will earn several certifications, including American Heart Association’s Heartsaver CPR AED for Adults, Children & Infants and American Heart Association’s First Aid.
Emergency Trauma Technician: You arrive first at the scene of a hunting accident. Your neighbor has been shot and is bleeding heavily. Help is hours away—what do you do?Whether you want to become a doctor or nurse, practice lifesaving skills, or prepare for a zombie apocalypse, start with ETT training. You’ll gain hands-on experience in trauma management, bleeding and shock control, airway and breathing management, patient stabilization, and medical transport. The course also covers medical emergencies, environmental and cold-weather injuries, emergency childbirth, pediatrics, geriatrics, and psychological emergencies. Although zombies aren’t real, emergencies are. Be the one who knows what to do.
Intro to Behavioral Health: Introduces key topics in behavioral health including mental health, trauma, substance use, suicide, resiliency, and therapeutic methods. Explores careers within the field of behavioral health and social services. Provides opportunity to earn appropriate Mental Health First Aid certificate. Students will receive 2 college credits and a Mental Health First Aid certificate.
Professionalism in Healthcare: Focuses on development of professional employability skills in health care. Emphasizes cultural competency to provide high quality patient care. Provides an opportunity to join the Alaska statewide Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) conference with high school students from across the state. BBRCTE students will not compete in HOSA events but will be able to engage in breakout sessions, learn about the HOSA competitions, and enjoy the energy and resources provided by the statewide conference. Includes tours of healthcare/university facilities. Students will receive 2 college credits.
Wilderness First Responder: The Wilderness First Responder course is the industry standard for professional guides, trip leaders, search and rescue team members, outdoor recreationists, and international travelers. Upon completion, you will be able to conduct a thorough physical exam, obtain a patient history, assess vital signs, provide emergency care in the wilderness, and make crucial evacuation decisions.
PATH Academy: The Pre-Apprenticeship Training in Healthcare (PATH) Academy is for Alaskans aged 16 and above, offering a gateway to explore potential career opportunities in health care. This hands-on training equips participants with essential skills and five nationally recognized certifications. Participants will become excellent candidates for an entry-level healthcare job or apprenticeship program. Once participants have completed the Academy they are connected with Alaska Primary Care Association Employment Specialists to assist them with job or apprenticeship placement.
PATH Academy participants can earn the following nationally recognized certifications:
- Basic Life Support CPR (this is a provider-level training, distinguishing it from regular CPR)
- Teen Mental Health First Aid
- First Aid
- Bloodborne Pathogens
- Mandt De-escalation Training
Allied Health Internship: Students will work with BBRCTE’s Internship Development Program Manager to be placed in an internship in the allied health field. More info to come!
